Care of the Elderly

The Care of the Elderly Department has a variety of subspecialty interests including, falls orthogeriatric liaison, Parkinson’s disease, syncope and epilepsy in older adults and delivers high quality services in acute Geriatric Medicine for Salford patients.

 

The acute service is managed across four wards by four Consultant Geriatricians.

 

Services are supported by nursing staff trained in the managing older people and multidisciplinary teams.  Mental Health Liaison support is provided by a Consultant Psychiatrist.

 

Further support in the form of strong leadership is provided by an experienced Safeguarding Adults team.

 

The Elderly Day Services Unit

The Elderly Day Services Unit is a hospital based unit that supports the older people of Salford both in the community and during their hospital admission. The unit has a variety of functions including:

 

  • Supporting older peoples clinics in the outpatient department
  • Specialist rehabilitation programmes for community dwelling patients
  • Recreational activities to support inpatient rehabilitation programmes
  • Providing short term multidisciplinary intervention in the hospital setting for community dwelling patients
  • Providing limited respite places for community dwelling older people who cannot be managed in a community day care facility
  • Discharge lounge for inpatients

 

The unit is based on the ground floor of the Ladywell Building and is open from Monday to Friday between 08:30 and 16:30 hours.
