Meet the Team

Salford Royal has some of Europe’s leading dermatology specialists on its team.

 

Several consultants hold or have recently held National and Regional roles in Management, Medical Education and Research including with the North Western Deanery, The British Association of Dermatologists, the American Academy of Dermatology and other affiliated bodies.

 

The department is run by 26 Consultant Dermatologists. Additionally, there are numerous supporting supervised junior staff and many specialist nurses with roles designed to compliment those of the consultants.

Professor Griffiths

Professor Christopher Griffiths BSc MD FRCP FRCPath

Foundation Professor of Dermatology University of Manchester

 

Professor Griffiths, BSc, MD, FRCP, FRCPath, is Foundation Professor of Dermatology at the University of Manchester and Director of the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre. He qualified from St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School, London University and gained his MD also from London University.  He trained in dermatology at St Mary’s Hospital, London and the University of Michigan.

 

He developed the “hub-and-spoke” model of dermatology services for Greater Manchester; and introduced a multidisciplinary clinic for severe psoriasis – the Manchester Psoriasis Service – which was awarded the Hospital Doctor Dermatology Team of the Year Award in 2002.  Named lectureships include the 2006 Sydney Watson Smith lecture at RCP Edinburgh and 2007 Parkes Weber lecture at RCP London. He is President of the European Dermatology Forum, and co-founder of the International Psoriasis Council. In 2009 he received the lifetime achievement award from the American Skin Association. He is also a Past-President of the British Association of Dermatologists and a past Chairman of the British Society for Investigative Dermatology. 

 

Professor Griffiths is on the editorial boards of 8 scientific journals, and is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Investigative Dermatology; author of 400 full articles and 150 book chapters, reviews and letters in scientific journals; and a co-editor of Rook’s Textbook. He has long-standing research interests in all aspects of psoriasis.

 

Professor Griffiths is a frequent fundraiser for the British Skin Foundation- last year raising over £31,000 for this worthwhile cause. Chris lives in Cheshire, with his wife and two children.

Professor Lesley Rhodes
Professor Lesley Elizabeth Rhodes BSc (1st Hons) AKC MB BS MD FRCP 

Professor of Experimental Dermatology and Director of the Photobiology Unit

 

Prof Rhodes is a consultant dermatologist specialising in effects of light on the skin, particularly photosensitivity disorders (sun allergies) and the use of photodynamic therapy (PDT) to treat superficial skin cancers and pre-cancers.

 

She qualified in Medicine at the University of London and undertook her research doctorate at the University of Liverpool, gaining further skin research experience in Boston, USA. She obtained clinical training in London, Birmingham and Leeds, followed by dermatology training in Liverpool.        

 

Prof Rhodes established a photobiology unit dedicated to effects of light on the skin, for which she and team achieved a national award (Hospital Doctor Award – Dermatology). She investigates adults and children with light-sensitivity and treats skin lesions with the light therapy PDT, at Salford Royal Hospital. She is senior author on the British Association of Dermatologists guideline report for best practice in PDT, and author on 8 other national reports on best practice in photodermatology.

 

She is performing trials to develop protective agents against sunlight’s hazardous effects, and is researching vitamin D requirements. She has contributed nationally and internationally to developments in dermatology as Chair and Board member of several societies and committees, with advisory roles including at NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence).  

  

Lesley likes to keep fit through spinning (studio bikes) and enjoys swimming. She is learning Welsh, and lives with her husband in Central Manchester and North Wales.

JOD

Dr John O'Driscoll MB ChB FRCP

Consultant Dermatologist

 

Dr John O’Driscoll is the Clinical Director for Dermatology at Salford Royal Foundation Trust and leads on management and strategy for the unit.

 

After education at De La Salle College, Salford and Stonyhurst College, Blackburn  he qualified in medicine at Westminster Hospital Medical School University of London. He subsequently trained in general medicine and dermatology in London and Manchester. He is also accredited as a general practitioner.

 

He was appointed as a Consultant Dermatologist at Hope Hospital, now Salford Royal Foundation Trust, in 1993.  His main interests are skin cancer, androgen disorders and general dermatology.

 

He is the Chair of the Greater Manchester and Cheshire Cancer Network Skin subgroup and he is on the Council and a trustee of the Manchester Medical Society.

 

He lives in Sale with his wife who works as general practitioner in East Manchester.

Dr Tim Clayton MB ChB MRCPCH FRCP (Edin)

Consultant Paediatric and General Dermatologist Honorary Lecturer University of Manchester

 

Dr Tim Clayton is a children's skin specialist and the clinical lead for paediatric dermatology. He graduated from Liverpool University and trained as a paediatrician at Alder Hey Children's Hospital. He then worked as a paediatric registrar in New Zealand. He completed higher specialist training in Dermatology in Leeds in 2006. He then worked as a Paediatric Dermatologist in Dublin and Liverpool. Whilst working in Dublin he became involved in a number of studies looking at the genetics of atopic eczema. This research is now being continued in Manchester.

 

Dr Clayton is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and a member of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. In 2005 he won an award for the best scientific paper and presentation at the British Society for Paediatric Dermatology (BSPD). His clinical interests include, vascular birthmarks, children's skin surgery, genetic skin disease, and eczema. Tim undertakes adult dermatology and skin cancer clinics on Fridays.

 

He lives in North Manchester with his wife and daughter. Outside of work Tim is an avid follower of his beloved Bury Football Club and plays a number of competitive sports. In his spare time Tim designs websites. He designed the Liverpool dermatology website www.liverpoolskin.net and has designed his own website which can be found on google.

Dr Alexander M Marsland BSc (Hons) MB ChB MRCP

Consultant Dermatologist and Urticaria Specialist

Honorary Lecturer University of Manchester

 

Dr Marsland attended schools in Manchester before going to Edinburgh University to study medicine. He undertook postgraduate medical training in Edinburgh and in the Hammersmith Hospital, London. He has received formal training in the dermatology units in Edinburgh and Manchester.

 

Dr Marsland undertook a one year fellowship in the Allergy depatment of  the Medical University of South Carolina, a world-renowned centre for urticaria research and treatment. Dr Marsland has developed a successful tertiary urticaria clinic here at Salford which attracts referrals from across the region and beyond, and supports ongoing research. He is a member of the North West Allergy and Clinical Immunology Strategy Board and leads on the subject of urticaria.

 

He is a member of Faculty of F1000 Medicine, an internet based post-peer review resource that recommends important research papers. He is also asked to referee articles for respected journals including the British Medical Journal group, Clinical and Experimental Allergy and Clinical and Experimental Dermatology.

 

Dr Marsland enjoys all aspects of general dermatology and has an interest in diagnosing and treating skin cancer and is part of the skin cancer multidisciplinary team. He aims to provide comprehensive, holistic, personalised care in a dignified and safe environment for all patients from cradle to grave.

dr o'donoghe

Dr Nuala O’Donoghue MB CHB MRCP

Consultant Dermatologist

 

Dr Nuala O’Donoghue qualified from Glasgow University, and is originally from Manchester. 

 

She trained in dermatology at St John’s Institute of Dermatology at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, London. She was appointed as a consultant dermatologist to St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College NHS Trust, London in 2007 where she was lead for skin cancer. 

 

She then moved back to the North and was appointed to Salford Royal Foundation Trust as Consultant Dermatologist and Consultant Teaching Fellow in 2010. 

 

Her main interests are general dermatology, skin cancer,  urticaria, undergraduate - and postgraduate - dermatology education.

dr ghura

Dr Vindy Ghura MB CHB MRCP

Consultant Dermatologist and Mohs Surgeon

 

Dr Ghura trained at Newcastle Medical School before specialising in Dermatology at Leicester. He further developed his specialist interest in skin cancer and facial skin surgery in Cardiff and then Lisbon. Dr Ghura is one of around 40 Mohs surgeons in the UK. Mohs' surgery is a specialist technique for removing difficult “non-melanoma” skin cancers (basal cell carcinomas or rodent ulcers).

 

Dr Ghura set up the Mohs' skin cancer service in Sheffield winning the Hospital’s Service development of the year award. He examines for the Royal College of Physicians and Cardiff University’s GP-Dermatology Diploma course. He teaches on many courses including the British Society for Dermatological Surgery (BSDS) annual skin surgery course and is also an executive committee member of the BSDS. 

 

Dr Ghura has research interests in skin cancer, surgery and medical education and has presented and published in all of these areas.

 

Dr Ghura lives in Cheshire and his hobbies include badminton, art and swimming.

RJGC

Dr Robert J G Chalmers MB FRCP

Consultant Dermatologist

 

Dr Chalmers trained as a dermatologist in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Manchester and has worked as a consultant dermatologist since 1983. His current commitments are at Salford Royal and Manchester Royal Infirmary, though he worked additionally for many years in Bolton and Bury. 

 

He has had a long interest in psoriasis, especially drug treatments for the condition. He was co-founder with Professor Christopher Griffiths of the Salford Psoriasis Specialty Service, which was formed in 1994 and is one of the longest-established such services in the world. He was a founder member of the Cochrane Skin Group, which examines scientifically the evidence for the effectiveness of treatments for skin disease and has contributed to a number of national guidelines on the management of psoriasis. 

 

He has published widely in the field of psoriasis and its treatment. He has recently focused on measuring the response to treatment for psoriasis from a patient’s point of view.

 

He is also interested in the classification of skin disease and is currently heading the dermatology group who are revising the International Classification of Diseases for the World Health Organization.

Dr John Lear MB ChB FRCP

Consultant Dermatologist

 

Dr Lear’s general medical training was at Leicester Medical School completing his dermatological training at the Midlands and South West before taking up his present Consultant Dermatologist post at Salford Royal in 2000.

 

His main interest is skin cancer: in particular basal cell carcinoma, Gorlins syndrome and immunosuppressed patients, such as transplant patients. He also sees all patients with aspects of general dermatology problems. Dr Lear has an interest in the surgical and non-surgical management of skin cancer, such as photodynamic therapy.

 

Dr Lear has over 100 research publications in the area of skin cancer, in particular the epidemiology, genetics, diagnosis and therapy of basal cell carcinoma, Gorlins syndrome and transplant related skin cancer. More recently his research has concentrated on new therapies for skin cancer, including photodynamic therapy and molecules targeting the pathway involved in basal cell carcinoma development.

 

Dr Lear lives in South Manchester and enjoys tennis, walking, skiing, football, theatre, and going to the cinema in his spare time.

Dr Vishal Madan MBBS (Hons) MD MRCP

Consultant Dermatologist, Laser and Dermatological Surgeon

 

Dr Madan trained in Medicine and Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy in India. He then worked on the Cambridge medical rotation, following which he trained in Dermatology at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust.

 

He has completed two fellowships - one in Laser Dermatology at Salford Royal NHS Foundation trust in 2008 and another in Mohs micrographic and reconstructive surgery at the Welsh Institute of Dermatology, Cardiff in 2010. He is a member of the executive committee of the British Medical Laser Association. 

 

Dr Madan is an invited reviewer for nine international journals and had published many articles, book chapters and a bookon specialty examination in Dermatology.

 

He is also involved in research into the use of lasers in dermatology, skin cancer surgery including Mohs surgery, and hair restoration.

 

Dr Madan lives in Salford and enjoys travelling.

Dr D A Fitzgerald

Consultant Dermatologist

University of St Andrews 1980-83. University of Manchester 1983-86. Fellowship at Yale University 1996-7.

 

Dr Fitzgerald is the Chair of the Salford Local Skin Cancer Multidisciplinary Team and the clinical lead at Bury’s Dermatology Service.

Dr Jennifer Yell MB ChB (Hons) FRCP

Consultant Dermatologist

  

Dr Yell graduated with MB ChB from the University of Cape Town, with honours and distinctions in the final professional examinations in 1984. She worked as a registrar and senior registrar at Oxford Radcliffe Hospital from 1989 to 1994. In 1994/ 95 she completed a fellowship at the University of North Carolina, becoming a Consultant Dermatologist in Greater Manchester in the same year.

 

Dr Yell is a past Chair of the British Society for the Study of vulval disease and has been a Council member of the International Society for the Study of vulvovaginal disease since 2009. She is also a member of the Clinical Services Committee at the British Association of Dermatologists.

 

Dr Yell’s research includes: Lupus erythematosus (Localisation of Ro Antigen in human skin cells). She is a peer reviewer for Dermatology journals and is on the editorial board of the Lower Genital tract journal.

 

Outside of work Jennifer enjoys Flamenco, Latin and Ballroom dancing. She lives in Hale with her husband (a consultant Radiologist) and two children.

Dr Richard Warren BSC (1st Hons), MBChB (Hons), MRCP, PhD

Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Dermatologist

 

Dr Richard Warren graduated from Liverpool University with a first 

class honours degree in Pharmacology and gained his Medical degree, 

with honours, one year later. He has been working in Dermatology for a 

decade, the last five years of which have involved time in dermatology 

research. His main area of interest is in the treatment of severe 

inflammatory skin disease, especially psoriasis. 

 

He is a consultant  in the world renowned psoriasis clinic and in the last 12 months has established a new combined clinic with Dr Hector Chinoy, a Consultant  Rheumatologist at SRFT, for patients with severe psoriasis and  psoriatic arthritis. He sits on a  number of national committees, including the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence  guideline group for psoriasis. For his research into psoriasis he has received national and international awards. He is regularly invited to speak at major dermatology congresses and publishes frequently in the  European Literature.

Dr Janice Ferguson MB BCH BAO MRCP

Consultant Dermatologist

 

Dr Ferguson studied at Queens University Belfast with further studies in Edinburgh and at the University of Manchester before her post graduate training in dermatology at Salford Royal.

 

She has worked at Salford Royal for 16 years providing laser services for skin conditions and general dermatology services.  She is an active participant in registrar teaching of specialist registrars and work across Greater Manchester providing a wide range of services for patients. 

 

Dr Feruson works closely with consultant colleagues, GPSI and specialist nurses and plastic surgery colleagues to ensure that patients get the best possible care.

 

For her research and scientific achievements she did a laboratory-based Phd. at the University of Manchester and Christie Hospital. She has also been involved in mainly clinical projects since then, collaborating with colleagues doing lab reseach or clinical trials. She is currently participating in a laser study on scleroderma patients with Dr Herrick in Rheumatology and less formally with Mr Willat on HHT patients.

 

Outside of work Dr Ferguson enjoys walking in the hills of Cheshire, Derbyshire, Lancashire and the Lake District.  She lives in Stockport with her husband and three children.

Dr Minal Singh MBChB , BSC (Hons), MRCP (UK), PGCME

Consultant Dermatologist and Honorary Lecturer

 

Dr Singh has an extensive medical background working at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Salford Royal.

 

She is the Medical Education Lead for the undergraduate programme in Dermatology, ENT and Ophthalomology for Mancheser Medical School. 

 

She lives in Manchester and enjoys cermaics in her spare time.

Dr Mary Judge MB FRCP

Consultant Dermatologist

 

Dr Judge graduated in Medicine from University College, Dublin and also has a Diploma in Child Health. After graduating Dr Judge trained in dermatology at St Thomas' Hospital, London and in paediatric dermatology at Great Ormond St Hospital.

 

Dr Judge set up the paediatric dermatology service for Salford and Greater Manchester. She has written textbook chapters and is a peer reviewer for dermatology journals. Dr Judge is also an advisor to patient support groups and a specialty tutor to dermatology trainees at Salford Royal.

 

Dr Judge is currently completing her MD thesis on the clinical classification, genetics and metabolic defects in the genetic ichthyoses. Her clinical research interests include eczema and skin therapies. She is also an invited lecturer at National Dermatology meetings and presents at international dermatology meetings.

 

Mary lives in Sale and enjoys gardening and staying fit – playing tennis, running (10K) and skiing. She is also learning to play the piano.

Helen Young

Dr Helen Young MB ChB PhD MRCP(UK)

Senior Lecturer in Dermatology and Honorary Consultant Dermatologist

 

Dr Young received her MB, ChB and PhD degrees from The University of Manchester. She trained in dermatology on the North West Regional Dermatology Training Scheme (Manchester) and at Harvard Medical School where she was a Research Fellow in Dermatology at the Cutaneous Biology Research Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, USA. 

 

She is a fully trained and accredited Consultant Dermatologist with 4 years of post graduate medical training prior to specialisation in dermatology.  Her Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) funded Clinical Senior Lectureship was awarded in September 2008 and she is the first Dermatologist to have received this award.

 
Dr Young is one of the Consultant Dermatologists who lead the Manchester Psoriasis Service – a multidisciplinary clinic for patients with severe psoriasis – which was awarded Hospital Doctor Dermatology Team of the Year Award in 2002.

 

Her research interests include cutaneous angiogenesis and psoriasis, and her research has received many awards at national and international meetings.  She is a member of the British Society for Investigative Dermatology committee.  She is also the Programme Director of the Masters in research in Medical Science course at The University of Manchester.

Emma McMullen
Dr Emma McMullen MB ChB MRCP

Consultant Dermatologist

 

Dr McMullen studied in Manchester and has been the clinical lead for inpatient dermatology since April 2009. She has been involved in both under- and postgraduate medical education for over 10 years.

 

Dr McMullen has been at Salford Royal since 2003 and has been involved with various aspects of dermatology research since then.  Her main areas of interest are management of severe skin conditions and inpatient dermatology along with nutrition and its impact on the skin.

 

Emma’s hobbies include yoga, running, travel, skiing and reading. She currently lives in South Manchester.

matt harries
Dr Matthew Harries MB ChB MRCP

Consultant Dermatologist

 

 

Dr Harries qualified from Leeds University and is originally from Leicestershire. He completed general medical training in Yorkshire before specializing in Dermatology in Manchester.

 

His main interest is in hair and scalp disorders, in particular the cicatricial (“scarring”) alopecias. He is currently completing a PhD at the University of Manchester studying the hair immune system in lichen planopilaris. He has also spent time as a visiting Research Fellow at the University of Lübeck in Germany. He is a member of the British Hair and Nail Group and provides medical support to the Cicatricial Alopecia Research Foundation-sponsored patient support group in Manchester.  

 

He currently lives in Cheshire with his wife, two children and two dogs.

Dr Tsui Ling MB ChB MD MRCP

Consultant Dermatologist

 

Dr Tsui Ling qualified in 1992 at the Queen’s University of Belfast and obtained her membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 1997. She then trained as a Dermatologist in Greater Manchester and obtained her specialist training certificate in 2005.

 

She obtained an MD in Photodermatology with the University of Manchester in 2009. She has been a NHS consultant since 2005. She is currently a full time Consultant Dermatologist at the Salford Royal Foundation Trust, and has general Dermatology clinics in the Bury Dermatology Service at Radcliffe. She has been training and working as a Dermatologist in the Salford and Bury area since 1990.

 

Her area of specialist interest is in Photobiology and Phototherapy. She is a consultant at the Photobiology Unit and also the clinical lead for Phototherapy Services at Salford Royal Foundation Trust. She specialises in the treatment of various skin diseases with Phototherapy, as well as investigation, diagnosis and management of photosensitivity disorders, particularly Polymorphic Light Eruption. She has presented in various national and international meetings as well as published scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed various Dermatological journals, and contributed to Dermatology textbooks. She is a member of the British Association of Dermatologists and British Photodermatology Group. She is currently leading on writing the national guidelines for PUVA treatment (a form of Phototherapy).

 

She originates from Singapore and is proficient in Mandarin. She enjoys playing the piano and practices Tai-Chi. She lives with her husband (Associate Medical Director for Salford PCT) and twin children.
