Haematology and Blood Transfusion

The main Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion is centred at the Salford Royal Hospital site (Turnberg Building, level 2) and provides services for Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and  Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust, Salford and Wigan GPs.

Collection

A collection/delivery service for other hospitals and GPs is operated by the Trusts transport department and there is a messenger service for non-urgent samples within the Hospital.

Venapuncture

A venepuncture service is available in the laboratory between 9.00am and Noon, Monday to Friday (Bank holidays excepted). Non-urgent in-patient samples should reach the laboratory before 11.00am on weekdays and 10.00am on Saturdays to avoid delays in processing.

Samples

Samples and requests for blood transfusion must be handed to a member of staff in the Transfusion Laboratory. All other sample requests should be delivered to the main haematology reception. The messenger collection service may be used for non-urgent samples. Be sure your requests are clear and that laboratory staff are able to meet them, especially in relation to urgent investigations.
