Rheumatology

The Rheumatology Department has five NHS/Academic Consultant colleagues and three Specialist Registrars to provide comprehensive Rheumatological care.

 

The multidisciplinary support team consists of research clinicians and nurses and dedicated nurse specialists and therapists. There are also excellent and dedicated Musculoskeletal Radiology services, allowing weekly educational combined meetings.

 

The Clinical Directorate prides itself on the delivery of high quality multidisciplinary care, and the busy outpatient department is supported by inpatient specialty beds with dedicated ward staff. In addition to general Rheumatology, the clinical department also acts as a tertiary referral centre for patients with problematic Connective Tissue Diseases including

  • scleroderma

  • myositis

  • SLE

  • and as a tertiary referral centre for problematic Metabolic Bone Diseases and Musculoskeletal Pain

 

Eric Bywaters Prize

Dr Hector Chinoy, an Arthritis Research Campaign Clinical Training Fellow based in CIGMR, has been awarded The Royal Society of Medicine Eric Bywaters Prize. This was awarded for his presentation entitled "Genetic, Haplotypic and Clinical Profiles in UK Caucasian Polymyositis and Dermatomyositis Patients", presented at the RSM in London on 11th January 2006.

This presentation summarised some of Dr Chinoy's research into this important disease, funded by the ARC and Myositis UK. Dr Chinoy is supervised by Dr Robert Cooper (Salford Royal) and Professor Bill Ollier (CIGMR).
