About Us

Medical and Nursing teams from the Wessex and Greater Manchester Neuroscience Centres have worked in collaboration to build this site as it was felt that there was a need for accurate and patient friendly information to be available to our patients and their loved ones.

 

The Greater Manchester Neuroscience Centre, Salford, UK:


The Greater Manchester Neuroscience Centre (GMNC) is located at Salford Royal in Eccles, Salford and provides a Neuroscience service to the population of Greater Manchester (a general population of approximately 3.2 million people).

 

Neuro-surgical and Neuro-medical wards located on this site include;

 

  • The Acute Stroke Unit (ASU)

  • L1 Ward – Stroke Rehabilitation ward

  • The Acute Neurology Unit (ANU)

  • C1 Ward – Programmed Investigations Unit (PIU)

  • C2 Ward – Acute Neuro-Rehabilitation Unit

  • B7 Ward – Acute Neuro-surgery ward

  • B8 Ward – Acute Neuro-surgery ward

  • The Neurosurgical High Dependency Unit (NHDU)

  • A3 ward

 

Other Departments within GMNC include;

 

  • Behavioural Medicine

  • Neuro-radiology

  • Neuro-pathology

  • Neuro-physiology

  • Neuro-anaesthesia

  • Neuro-psychiatry

  • The Pain Centre

  • Neuro-Outpatients

 

Currently, the medical team consist of 11 Consultant Neuro-surgeons (three of whom have a specialist interest in Neuro-vascular surgery), 17 Consultant Neurologists, five Consultants in Rehabilitation Medicine and three Consultant Neuro-radiologists who support a network of junior doctors.

 

A team of Specialist Nurses lead services which include;

 

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

  • Epilepsy

  • Stroke

  • Sub-Arachnoid Haemorrhage (SAH)

  • Acute Neuro-Rehabilitation

  • Neuro-oncology

  • Motor Neurone Disease (MND)

  • and Movement Disorder including Dystonia and Parkinsons Disease (PD).

 

There are also four Clinical Neuro-psychologists that work closely with the medical consultants and the specialist nurses.

 

The Wessex Neurological Centre, Southampton, UK:


The Wessex Neurological Centre (WNC) is located at Southampton General Hospital and provides a regional service to Hampshire and Isle of Wight, Dorset, West Sussex, South Wiltshire and the Channel Islands, a population in excess of 3 million. (Previously known as Wessex)

 

Neuro-surgical and Neuro-medical wards located on this site include;

 

  • NICU – Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (including High Dependency)

  • C Neuro – Acute adult Neurosurgical ward

  • D Neuro - Acute adult Neurosurgical ward

  • C Paeds – Acute paediatric Neurosurgical ward

  • Stanley Graveson – Adult Neurology

  • DCU – Day Case Unit

 

Other Departments within WNC include;

 

  • Neuro-psychology

  • Neuro-outpatients

  • Neuro-physiology

  • Neuro-physiotherapy

  • Neuro-theatres

  • The Face place

  • and Neuro-radiology.

 

Currently, the medical team consist of 12 Consultant Neurosurgeons, 11 Consultant Neurologists and four Consultant Neuro-radiologists who support a network of junior doctors.
