Jim Potter

Mr James J Potter

Chairman

 

Jim Potter was born and raised in the Greater Manchester area, educated at Ambrose Barlow School and subsequently Salford Technical College and Moston College of Further Education.

 

He has spent most of his working life in electrical engineering, initially as an engineer then later moving into management, relocating to the West Midlands in 1969 and then to the Middle East in 1980 where he lived and worked until 1988.  Jim moved back to the UK in 1988 to join a packaging company based on Salford Quays working as Export Salford Director and in 1990 he was made Managing Director, the position he still holds today.  In addition to the UK operation Jim also has responsibility for the company’s French, US and China-based operations.

 

Jim lives in Salford and was appointed to the Trust Board in November 1999.

 


David Dalton
Mr David N Dalton

Chief Executive

 

David has been CEO at Salford Royal for 10 years.  He has a particular interest in improving patient safety and the quality of the patient experience. He is leading a three year programme to achieve the lowest mortality rate in the NHS for his Trust and to reduce the incidence of

harmful events by 50%.

 

He also chairs AQuA which supports 50 healthcare organisations across the North West in their improvement activities and has established a new network organisation of highly performing Foundation Trusts - NHS QUEST – which aims to achieve unprecedented levels of quality improvement.


He joined the Trust in 2001 having previously been Chief Executive at The Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery NHS Trust.



Tony Whitfield

Executive Director of Finance/Deputy Chief Executive 

 

Tony Whitfield began his career in the NHS in 1983, joining Salford Royal in 2003.  He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and holds an MA in Financial Management.  He is currently Vice President of HFMA.  He has responsibilities for Finance, IT Information, Procurement along with being Executive Lead for the Division of Neurosciences and Renal Services.

 

He is married with two children.

 

He has a keen interest in service line management as a tool for organisational engagement to deliver effective patient services, efficiently and to the highest standards. 

 


Chris Brookes

Mr Chris Brookes

Executive Medical Director

 

He is a Consultant in the Emergency Department, which sees approximately 75,000 patients a year. He was previously the Group Clinical Director for Medicine, Critical Care and Clinical Support Services, which includes pathology and radiology.

 

His main clinical interests centre around the resuscitation of critically ill and injured patients and every day on average three such patients present to the Department.

 


Elaine Burke

Executive Nurse Director

 

Elaine Burke joined the Trust in April 2004 from Stockport NHS Trust where she was the Director of Nursing. 

 

She began her nurse training in Warrington and went on to work in Intensive Care and General Medicine, where she was a ward sister for seven years.  She then moved to Whiston Hospital to take a Specialist Nurse post in Practice Development.  This was followed by an internal move to nurse management and surgery, and she then took the post of Director of Nursing at The Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Liverpool in 1996, moving to Stockport five years later.

 

Elaine has a son and she lives in Warrington.

 


Simon Neville

Executive Director of Strategy and Development

 

Simon is responsible for the Trust’s planning processes and for the development of strategy. He is also the Lead Executive for Clinical Support Services and Tertiary Medicine and for Facilities and Estates services. Simon has led the Trust’s Hospital Redevelopment Programme in a £200m investment in improved facilities of the Salford Royal Site.


Simon has worked in the NHS since 1983, in a variety of general management and planning roles at Northwick Park, Charing Cross and Westminster Hospitals in London, before he worked on the development of the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.


He joined the Trust in October 2002 having been Director of Corporate Development at the acute trust in Blackburn where he was Project Director for Blackburn’s £100m private finance initiative to centralise hospital services.  Simon came to Salford as the Programme Director for the SHIFT Programme (Salford’s Health Investment for Tomorrow) which has seen a remodelling of services implemented by a series of capital investments in new facilities in the city.

 


David Wood

Executive Director of Organisational Development and Corporate Affairs

 

David has worked in NHS Personnel and Human Resources since 1982. In 1984, he was awarded the Diploma of the Institute for Health Services Management. His previous employers include Argyll and Clyde Health Board, North Tees Health NHS Trust and the Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, where he was Executive Director of Human Resources and Corporate Services.

 

He took up his current position here at Salford Royal in June 2008. David was national Chairman of the Foundation Trust Network’s HR Directors’ Group until December 2009. He has acted as examiner for the 'Human Resources' paper of the Institute of Health Record Information and Management's 'Certificate' programme and has also assessed for the NHS Management Training Scheme.

 

He has been employer member of the North West Regional Sub-Committee of the Advisory Committee on Clinical Excellence Awards since December 2008.

 


John Willis

Vice Chairman/Non-Executive Director/Chairman of the Audit Committee

 

John was Chief Executive of Salford City Council from 1993 until his retirement in 2006l in this capacity he was also Clerk to the Greater Manchester Policy Authority. Prior to being appointed Chief Executive, he was City Treasurer at Salford for seven years.

 

He studied at the University of Manchester and gained the degree of Bachelor of arts in Economic and Social Studies and subsequently qualified as an accountant  in 1971. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Public finance and Accountancy and was an examiner of the institute for many years.

 

John led the Council officer team that secure funding for the Lowry, one of the twelve Landmark Millennium projects and the National Millennium Project for the Arts. He oversaw much of the development of Salford Quays and the regeneration of Salford. In 2002 he was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters honoris causa from the University of Salford  and in 2006 was appointed a Commander of the British Empire for services to local government in Salford.

 

He has considerable experience of managing large, complex public sector organisations with substantial revenue and capital budgets.

 

He is currently a Trustee at of the Lowry, Council Member of the University of Salford and a Trustee and Distributor of the Booth Charities. John was appointed as Deputy Lieutenant of Greater Manchester County in 2006.

 

 

Howard Forster

Non-Executive Director

 

Howard was appointed in April 2007 and is a Partner in a Global Consultancy firm.

 

Howard runs offices in Manchester, Liverpool, Belfast and Dublin, employing 250 staff. Howard has over 17 years experience in the health sector, including Executive Director roles in the NHS before moving into the private sector.

 

Howard maintains an extensive network within the health sector and with the business community in the North West and is also a Regional Council Member for the CBI North West.

 

 

Mr Mike Halsall

Mike was appointed in April 2007 and is a solicitor. Mike started out as a physicist but then qualified as a lawyer. He worked in private practice, moved into local government and became borough solicitor to a Lancashire district council. 

 

Mike has worked in industry and was a partner in a private practice in Salford. Mike is currently a Litigation Manager for a Metropolitan Borough Council working in child and adult protection, prosecutions and anti-social behaviour, and employment.

 

Mike’s current speciality is corporate governance looking at partnerships and new ways of working within the public sector.

 

 

Diane Brown

Non-Executive Director

 

Diane was appointed in January 2009. 

 

As HR Director and Fellow of the CIPD, she has worked with Senior Global Leaders in complex multinational and matrix companies, i.e.

  • Pharmaceuticals R&D (AstraZeneca)

  • Finance (Marks & Spencer Money) and Retail (Marks & Spencer)

 

Diane's previous roles have included Global Business Parnering working accross the UK, US, Sweden & Canada, Talent Director for R&D and Head of Recruitment.  Diane has developed a commercial understanding of a number of business and people related issues

 

She has considerable experience in:

  • Career Pathing and Development

  • Performance Management

  • Leading Organisational Change

  • Project Management

  • Recruitment

  • Leadership Development and

  • Senior Executive Coaching.

 

Diane was a Non Executive Director for a theatre company in Chester from 1993-1998.    She maintains her personal development through CIPD and in HR/Business activities as a Principal Consultant and Training & Development Associate.

 

Diane has 2 sons and 2 grandchildren.

 

 

Anne Williams

Anne Williams, National Director for Learning Disabilities, Department of Health

 

Anne has over 30 years of experience in social care working in the NHS, voluntary sector and Local Authorities.  From 1999 to 2005 she was Director of Community and Social Services at Salford City Council managing Neighbourhood Services and Children’s and Adult Social Care.  Between September 2005 and September 2008, as Strategic Director, she managed Neighbourhood Services, Adult Social Care and Culture and Leisure Services. 

 

She has an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Salford.

 

Anne was an active member firstly of the Association of Directors of Social Services and then of the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS), both locally and nationally.  She became Vice President of ADSS from October 2006 and was the first President of ADASS from its launch on 26 March 2007.  During her presidential year she was closely involved in work with the Department of Health on a number of fundamental initiatives across adult social care and health, such as Putting People First, the Darzi Review and World Class Commissioning. 

 

Anne was awarded a CBE in June 2009 for services to Local Government.

 

Anne took over the post of National Director for Learning Disabilities with the Department of Health in October 2008. She was extensively involved in the development of Valuing People Now and one of her key responsibilities is to lead its delivery across health and social care.
