Salford Royal is crowned Employer of the Year

Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust has been named as the Greater Manchester Employer of the Year at the Greater Manchester Employer Coalition Awards.

 

As one of the largest employers in Salford, the Trust won the award for its commitment to supporting local communities by; reducing unemployment, providing additional support for young people and maximising local benefit through supply chains.

 

The Trust supports people within Greater Manchester to obtain work experience, work preparation placements, apprenticeships and employment. In partnership with Jobcentre Plus, the Trust set up a bi-monthly GATEway event on-site and provides local unemployed people with one to one support to complete application forms, prepare CVs, and get interview skills and advice. The number of people who have been supported each year has leapt from 502 in 2005 to 1381 in 2009.

By creating links with partner organisations we can ensure that we can help more people by creating more opportunities for training, advice and employment. The more people we help the better. It’s extremely rewarding to see those who have come through our doors gain practical experience and secure employment opportunities.”

 

A close partnership has been developed with Balfour Beatty, the Trust’s partner in the hospital re-development programme, to develop an Employment Charter focusing on optimising local labour benefits. The scheme has already benefited 15 organisations within a 30-mile radius. The Trust is also a National Skills Academy for Construction and Balfour Beatty employs a dedicated person to recruit new trainees and local people into job roles and as a result, 57% of the workforce resides within 30 miles and 39% within 15 miles of the site.

 

Mike Hall, General Manager for Facilities said:

“The completion of the re-development of the Salford Royal site in 2012 will bring great benefit to many in Salford and Greater Manchester, but we must celebrate the positive impact it is already having on the community. At a time when the economy and local people have faced challenging times, together with our partners, we have been able to offer local people skills, experience and many now have a career.”

 

Salford schools, colleges and the University have also benefited from the partnership; participating in mock interview days, careers events, work experience, after-school clubs, site visits and introductions for teachers.
