Misba Khan
Misba Khan, who embarks on a 100km ski across the North Pole in April 2018

Misba sets off for the North Pole

We are wishing the very best of luck to Misba Khan, who works in the ELFS Finance Team and is a Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust employee, as she embarks on a 100km expedition ski across the North Pole.

Misba sets off on the ice on Saturday, April 14th and is part of an 11-strong team of women aiming to cover the distance within two weeks.

The team have been brought together by explorer, Felicity Aston, with Misba being picked from 1,000 applicants across Europe and the Middle East to represent the UK in the Women’s Euro-Arabian North Pole Expedition 2018.

The aim of this epic journey is to foster greater dialogue and understanding between women from Western and Arabian cultures. The expedition aims to inspire all women to reach beyond the expectation of others and fulfil their own life ambitions.

Ranging in age from 26 to 49 they represent a diverse variety of occupations, backgrounds and levels of experience in the outdoors.

Misba is a regular walker and has trekked mountains across the world, including Kilimanjaro and the Atlas Mountains, but she is preparing for this to be her toughest challenge yet.

She said: “Endurance is going to be the big factor. We might cover 20km in a day but then wake up the next day to find out the ice has drifted 10km back so we need to cover that all over again. We need to cover the 100 km in two weeks so there’s a real time pressure.”

Misba, who is married with two grown up children, will turn 50 soon – making her the oldest member of the expedition.

Her 18-months preparation for the expedition has included workouts in the gym, sessions with her personal trainer, swimming, skiing in Iceland and pulling a sledge across the desert.

She said: “I am all trained out and ready for the challenge now. The group I am doing this with have already met three times for some mini expeditions.”
