Cellular Pathology

What we do:

Cellular Pathology receives tissue specimens and fluids from patients, taken during surgical operations, clinic visits, or as part of a post-mortem examination. Tissue or fluid associated with the condition under investigation is sent to our laboratory.

We process and stain the specimens so we can examine them using a microscope to observe changes in the architecture of tissues or within the cells themselves. We are able to diagnose inflammatory diseases, benign growths, infections, cancer and also the absence of disease.

Our new service:

On 10th September 2012, the existing cellular pathology service at Salford Royal merged with the department from Wigan to form the PAWS (Pathology at Wigan & Salford) Cellular Pathology service.

The Department of Cellular Pathology encompasses the closely related disciplines of Non-gynaecological Cytology, Histopathology, Neuropathology and Dermatopathology. These are supported by a comprehensive immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy service.

The new combined department is committed to providing the same high quality, cost effective service to patients and service users from both trusts.

PAWS Cellular Pathology provides services to:

  • Salford Royal Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust,
  • Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust
  • Salford Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG)
  • Wigan Borough Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG)
  • HM Coroner (Manchester West)
  • Ramsay Healthcare
  • Spire

We offer specialist reporting services to other NHS trusts both regionally and nationally including neuropathology, dermatopathology, Her-2 testing and FISH.

Our department also encompasses the SRFT Mortuary Service. We provide a service to the Trust and the local community from our comprehensive facility based in the Mayo building at Salford Royal.

Our department is accredited with CPA (UK) Ltd and the mortuary is licensed by the HTA.

The laboratories are staffed from 8:30 to 17:30 Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays. There is no formal out of hours service in Cellular Pathology.

The laboratory can be found in the Red area (Turnberg Building) 2nd floor. Visitors should report to Central Reception.
