Meet the team

Meet the Team

The department is run by seven consultants who are supported by highly experienced nurses within the wards to deliver a high standrd stroke service. The nursing team is supported by a lead nurse, advanced nurse practitoners in training and a nurse consultant.

Charles Sherrington Charles Sherrington (Dr) Consultant

Dr Charles Sherrington qualified in Liverpool in 1988 and trained in Neurology and Stroke at the Walton Centre in Liverpool, Oxford and Leeds. He has been a consultant at the Greater Manchester Neurosciences Centre since 1998 and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.


He is the clinical lead for Stroke and has been integral in developing the Greater Manchester Stroke Network and stroke pathway and establishing the Comprehensive Stroke centre at Salford Royal.


He is also the Training Program director for Stroke Medicine for the Northwestern Deanery and sits on the Royal College of Physicians Standing Advisory Committee.  


He lives in Salford with his two children and likes to play tennis in his spare time.

Dr Chris Douglass Chris Douglass (Dr) Consultant, Audit Lead

Dr Chris Douglass qualified in 1999 from Oxford University and completed his medical training in Gloucestershire and speciality training in Sheffield before becoming a Consultant Neurologist in Salford in 2009.


His main areas of interest are stroke, functional neurological disorders and motor neurone disease.


He is an Honorary Consultant at Tameside Hospital where he provides outpatient clinics and inpatient consultations and is a member of their National Service Framework committee for Long Term Conditions.


He is also on the consultant on call rota for the Comprehensive Stroke Centre at Salford Royal providing hyperacute stroke care for Greater Manchester.


He is currently the audit lead for the neurology department.

Craig Smith Craig Smith (Dr) Consultant, Governance Lead

Dr Smith received his undergraduate training at the University of Manchester. His postgraduate training followed in Greater Manchester, including a Stroke Association Training Fellowship in Stroke Medicine at Salford Royal.  He recieved his MD from the University of Manchester following a period of research at SRFT. 


His areas of clinical interest are in the management of acute stroke, including intravenous and intra-arterial thrombolysis; younger patients with stroke; complex cervical/ intra-cranial atheromatous disease; cardioembolic stroke, including patent formaen ovale.


He is currently the clinical governance lead for stroke and the stroke lead/ liaison for neurocritical care, neuroimaging and hyperacute intra-arterial intervention. He is also a member of the Brain Injury Research Group at the University of Manchester, with particular interests and activity in the field of inflammation and infection in cerebrovascular disease.

no image available Jane Wainwright (Dr) Consultant

Dr Jane Wainwright graduated from the University of Edinburgh Medical School in 1992. She completed her medical training in Liverpool and Edinburgh before moving to King's College Hospital, London to undertake research. Her doctorate on carotid artery disease was awarded in 1999. She completed her specialist training in Neurology and Stroke in Glasgow, London and Manchester, being appointed to the post of Consultant Neurologist in 2005.


Her main interests are in cerebrovascular disease, particularly cervical artery dissection and arteriovenous malformations (AVM) and she has published research in cerebrovascular disease.  She is the Lead Clinician for Salford Royal's Hyperacute Stroke Research Centre.


She lives in Salford and enjoys hill walking, the cinema and travelling.

no image available Pippa Tyrrell (Dr) Consultant Stroke Physician and Senior Lecturer in Stroke

Dr Pippa Tyrrell was educated at the University of Cambridge and The London Hospital Medical College.   She has held several positions starting with Junior hospital posts in medicine and neurology at St Bartholomew's Hospital and the University Hospital in Geneva and Registrar posts at St Mary's Hospital London. 


She was a research fellow at National Hospital for Neurology and MRC Cyclotron Unit, Hammersmith Hospital and a Senior registrar posts in Charing Cross Hospital London and Salford Royal.


Dr Tyrrell was the first Stroke Physician appointed in Manchester in 1995, and built up the stroke service in Salford. We opened our Acute Stroke Unit in 2004 and became the Comprehensive Stroke Centre for Greater Manchester in 2008. She is an Associate Director of the Royal College of Physicians Stroke programme and takes on responsibility for the National Stroke Audit.


She is a Senior lecturer in the University of Manchester and leads a multidisciplinary research group. Her interests include the role of inflammatory modulation in cerebral ischaemia and subarachnoid haemorrhage, and stroke rehabilitation studies. She leads the Manchester stroke implementation CLAHRC and she is the Clinical Lead for the NW Stroke Local Research Network.


She lives in Cheshire with her family, tending to her allotment and looking after her chickens. She reads a lot, enjoys the theatre, and is involved in developing a community orchard.

no image available Rebecca Grue (Dr) Consultant

Dr Rebecca Grue graduated from Manchester Medical School in 2000 and also has a BSc in medical genetics. She is Workforce Development lead for the Greater Manchester Stroke Network, involving organising training and development for stroke professionals in the region.


She is a consultant in Acute Medicine and Stroke, with a background in Internal Medicine, Elderly Care and subspecialty training in Stroke.
