Falls Awareness Week - June 16-20

Members of the public are invited to an information fair at Salford Royal to mark Falls Awareness Week.

The awareness week runs from June 16 – 20 and is aimed at preventing falls and sharing information and good practice.

Falls and fractures in people aged 65 and over account for more than 4 million hospital bed days each year in England alone.

The information fair will be held on Friday, June 20, from 9am-12noon in the Humphrey Booth Lecture Theatre, Mayo Building at Salford Royal.

At the fair, members of the public can speak to various specialists from services and departments at the Trust including intermediate care, podiatry, telecare and can also take part in exercise taster sessions.

Emma Spellman, Falls Lead at Salford Royal, said: “Falling can destroy a person’s confidence and independence with around one in 10 older people who fall becoming afraid to leave their own home in case they fall again.

“There are a number of ways in which people can help prevent falls including regular exercise, which improves balance. A tailored exercise programme can reduce falls by as much as 54%.”
