Salford Royal works out at work

Earlier in July (Wednesday 12 July) Salford Royal staff learned how simple changes can help them lead a fitter and healthier lifestyle.

Activities to get staff exercising outside the Hope Building included mini gym classes, a ‘Keep It Going’ Challenge where staff cycle spin bikes throughout their lunch break in a relay as well as other mini races and challenges throughout the day with prizes and giveaways for those taking part.

The event was organised by Salford Royal physiotherapist Lynne Grainger, as part of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy’s national Workout at Work campaign, which encourages employees to take more exercise and make the most of their time at work. The campaign also highlights the benefits of a fitter, healthier workforce to employers.

Speaking about the event Lynne said: “Our Workout at Work event is a great way to encourage staff to improve their health and take more exercise.

“It encourages staff to build physical activity into their working day which is beneficial for their health and wellbeing. It also gives us the opportunity to explain how sedentary postures and repetitive movement can be managed improving their health and performance at work.”

Lynne has some key recommendations for how to get the most out of your time at work:

  • Make the most of your breaks – take them and use the time to get active by going for a short walk to stretch your legs
  • Take the stairs rather than the lift
  • Report any physical problems you may have so your work station can be assessed and you can receive tailor made advice to carry out your job safely
  • Share ideas for healthy eating and exercise with your colleagues
  • Participate in physical activity and sports wherever possible.
