Short courses in Salford educate people newly diagnosed with diabetes

Three free courses, led by specialist diabetes nurses and specialist diabetes dietitians, are available in Salford and help to inform and support people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

If you have type 1 diabetes

For those with type 1 diabetes, Salford Royal offers the DAFNE course. This is a structured diabetes education course. DAFNE stands for dose adjustment for normal eating and the course helps you to work towards your personal diabetes-related goals so you may lead as normal a life as possible, while controlling your blood glucose, so reducing the risk of long-term complications related to diabetes.

The course runs six times a year and takes place every Tuesday for five weeks, 9am-5pm, at Swinton Gateway.

If you have type 2 diabetes

Salford Royal runs X-PERT courses for people newly-diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Groups meet every week for six weeks, various days and session times are available, at community locations across Salford (venues change to ensure the course is accessible to the greatest number of people).

The two-and-a-half hour sessions cover what happens in the body when you have diabetes, as well as looking at diet and lifestyle – for example exercise, and changing shopping habits – as well as complications, and how to prevent them.

The course is also open to people who may have been diagnosed for some time, but who feel they would still benefit from some introductory information. After the six weeks, attendees are welcome to attend further sessions.

There is another course available for people with type 2 diabetes, called Living with DiabetesLiving with Diabetes is a three-week course which focuses on self-management, diet, activity and offers help to overcome issues around living with diabetes.

If you are interested in attending either the DAFNE course (for type 1 diabetes) or the X-PERT or Living with Diabetes courses (for type 2 diabetes), please speak to your GP or any member of your diabetes team at Salford Royal.
